In early 2021, Levelset began a collaboration with the Manufacturing Institute (MI) to support its Second Chance Employment Initiative. MI is the workforce and education partner of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and leads content and programming to meet critical needs in the industry and its 14,000 member companies.  The Second Chance Hiring Initiative was designed to meet both talent demands and inclusivity goals of manufacturers as they worked to expand the talent pool in a growing sector that boasts active 12.8 million workers and 900,000 available jobs. 

MI engaged Levelset to help build tools and learning resources to meet stated goals from manufacturers about building a broader and more accessible workforce. This has included planning and leading sessions on inclusive hiring populated by several hundred employers, creating content for MI’s Second Chance Hiring web portal, and providing “office hours” to members with specific questions on implementing new initiatives and practices. 

Manufacturing Institute’s (MI) collaboration with Levelset has been a major asset to our Second Chance Hiring Initiative. Together we have helped manufacturers implement strategies and best practices to modernize hiring policies and build new talent pipelines through partnerships with community organizations.

We began working with Bojangles’ Restaurants in the  spring of 2019 to implement a new model for recruiting and hiring people with past convictions. This included adapting its application process, hiring matrix and review protocols to reduce exclusions and partnering with community organizations and reentry programs to help develop a pipeline of candidates and build wraparound support for employees with past convictions.

In addition, Levelset established a Second Chance pilot in collaboration with MI and a large employer, designed to create best practices to inform the industry. Through the pilot, Levelset is helping modernize HR policies and internal training, while developing community partnerships in high-demand markets to proactively recruit and support candidates with past convictions. MI and Levelset are collaborating to help share the learnings from the pilot across MI’s network and encourage more manufacturers to adopt and replicate these practices.
